SEPTIC DO's
- DO educate your family to proper use of the system
- DO check for faucet leaks - it is estimated that one leaky faucet can waste as much as 700 gallons of water a year
- DO setup and adhere to a sound system of inspection and cleaning
- DO install a riser/manhole just below ground level if tank is more than a foot below the ground level
- DO Inspect outlet baffles as they are important in stopping the solids from entering the leach fields
- DO keep accurate records about locating and cleaning of the system in the permanent house file, so this information can be passed on to the next owner
SEPTIC DONT's
- DON'T do all your laundry in one day - space it out
- DON'T put a lot of water into the system all at one time - use water sparingly and teach children to do the same
- DON'T allow excess amounts of fat or grease to enter the system - it can congeal and cause obstructions
- DON'T flush down paper towels, tissue paper or other heavy matter
- DON'T use chemical compounds or septic tank "cleaners". They do not improve the bacterial process and some may actually retard it
- DON'T use large amounts of laundry soap, detergent, bleach, drain cleaner - recommended quantities should not adversely affect the system - liquid soap is the best
- DON'T discharge from any water treatment should not go into the septic system
