Breathing or allergy problems?
Have you ever suffered through what seemed like endless or recurring colds, sinus infections, headaches, fatigue, itchy eyes or other general malaise symptoms and wondered what the problem was? Is there someone suffering from asthma, COPD or other respiratory issues in your home and you can’t seem to figure out what can be done to help alleviate their symptoms? Is there someone in your household that suffers from allergies and can’t seem to find adequate relief? Your indoor air quality may be the culprit. Taking some steps can improve the quality of the air you breathe and your well-being. Most people don’t think about the obvious culprits that they can’t see—particulate matter like dust mites, mold and mildew spores, pet dander, pollen, etc. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has warned that indoor air pollution can be more harmful to people than the air outside.
Newer Home= Air Quality Problem? Guess again. Some of the newer energy-efficient homes that are very well insulated may also be among the most dangerous for home indoor air quality. That’s because they restrict the ability for fresh air to seep into the home. The same irritants keep circulating over and over in your home, increasing the odds of adverse reactions.
What can I do? You may want to look at HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters for your furnace/AC unit. They are designed to remove 99.97 percent of the particulates that pass through them. An Ultra HEPA is an even more efficient form of a HEPA filter, which cleans out about 99.999 percent of the particulates that go through them. However, it is very important that the filters be changed frequently. A humidifier that is hooked up to the furnace/AC unit can be beneficial to combat dry air, but if one is installed, the water should be changed on a regular basis so that mold does not grow and spores get blown throughout your home. You may want to think about investing in a whole-house air purification system that will hook up to your central heating and air conditioning system. This will enable every room in your home to receive filtered air. Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up feeling well and refreshed? It can happen!
